Balancing Adapt

Balancing Adapt is an interactive playscape composed of six wooden, waffled, bowl-shaped benches. The global community is experiencing disruptions and limitations from the COVID-19 pandemic. Social distancing, lockdowns, and other public health measures have forced modifications to our normal ways of life. This project’s installation activates a temporary park in Plaza Escuelas Trevijano to create a new type of gathering space during the pandemic. Custom-fabricated by CNC machine, the bowls are designed to be the right size for community members to exercise and play with Balancing Adapt, individually or in groups. Like a precarious roly-poly seeking proper balance, the bowls are askew. Visitors can enjoy the wobbling bowls, balancing as in a hammock. Some require only one person, while others need multiple people to work together to restore balance. The direction of the wobbling can create four types of space by simple rotation: XL, a very large event space; L, large gathering spaces; M, small gathering spaces; and S, small individual pods.
